Description
Melamet Cream (15 gm) is a triple-combination prescription medication primarily used for the short-term treatment of moderate-to-severe melasma (dark, discoloured patches on the face). It combines a skin-lightening agent, a retinoid, and a corticosteroid to reduce pigmentation and promote skin renewal.
Key Components & How They Work
Hydroquinone (2% w/w): A skin-bleaching agent that inhibits the enzyme tyrosinase, which is responsible for melanin production. This helps fade existing dark spots.
Tretinoin (0.025% w/w): A retinoid (Vitamin A derivative) that increases skin cell turnover, helping to exfoliate pigmented cells and allowing other ingredients to penetrate more effectively.Mometasone Furoate (0.1% w/w): A medium-strength corticosteroid that reduces the inflammation, redness, and itching often caused by the other two active ingredients.
Usage Instructions
Application: Apply a thin layer to the affected areas only, once daily—ideally at night.
Sun Protection: It is critical to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30+) during the day and wear protective clothing, as Melamet makes your skin highly sensitive to UV rays.
Duration: Typically used for 6–8 weeks; prolonged use without medical supervision is not advised due to the risk of skin thinning or rebound hyperpigmentation.
Safety & Side Effects
Common Side Effects: Mild burning, stinging, redness, itching, and dryness at the application site.
Pregnancy/Breastfeeding: Generally considered unsafe during pregnancy as tretinoin can harm the unborn baby. Use with caution and only under medical advice during breastfeeding.
